Where is Montserrat Spain ?
Montserrat Spain is located 60 kms northwest of Barcelona. In car, it takes about 1 hour 15 minutes from city centre to the Monastery. Montserrat can be reached by road but also by cable car or by rack railway from Ferrocarrils of the Generalitat de Catalunya, which bring you to the monastery. From there, you can reach the holy cave and San Juan by funicular railway. Several hiking trails have been laid out and provide access to other remains such as ancient hermitages, small churches or monuments scattered and often abandoned in the surrounding mountains. A dream for trekking.

Must do in Montserrat :

  • Lovers of history, spiritualism or pilgrimage. Montserrat is dedicated to the Moreneta - the black virgin of Montserrat - who, according to legend, was seen in a cave of the massif. Santa Maria de Montserrat is since the patron saint of Catalonia. The famous sculpture with the effigy of Mary is a statue of Romanesque style, in poplar, dating from the twelfth century.
  • Take a guided tour of the Monastery and the Abbey. The easiest way to learn everything about this place. We also visit : Plaça de l'Abat Oliba, Plaça de Santa Maria, the square of the basilica, the basilica, the room of the Virgin and the Chapel Notre-Dame.
  • Listen to the famous boys’ choir the Escolania. A choir, of sopranos and altos, formed at the end of the 12th century. He is still active, accompanying the monks by singing the Salve Regina to the Black Virgin and Vespers every day a 1pm and 6:45pm.
  • Visit the Montserrat Museum and its 6 permanent collections to admire the works of El Greco, Caravaggio, Picasso or Dalí...
  • Visit the new audiovisual area of Montserrat whose goal is to discover what is and what Montserrat means to thousands of visitors and pilgrims.
  • Go hiking to discover the Montserrat Natural Park. This millions of years old massif whose name can be translated as a mountain (mount) in sawtooth shape (serrat). It is a delight for lovers of mountain walks and climbing. It highest point is 1236 m.
  • Gourmets are not forgotten with the opportunity to participate, in small groups, in guided tours from Barcelona around wine, cava, tapas, foods and local products tastings. Discover the magnificent vineyards and the two most famous Catalan appellations: D.O Penedès and D.O Pla de Bages.
